Luke is the author of the “Gospel of Luke” and the “Acts of the Apostles”
Church historian Eusebius 300 A.D. attributes the book to Luke
                Luke is believed to have been a native of Syrian Antioch
A Gentile (by name)
Was likely associated with Barnabas and Paul in the early days of the Antioch church
(as early as 42 AD when Barnabas arrived?)
Traveled on part of Paul’s 2nd and 3rd missionary journeys

Transitions to first person plural from third person twice in Acts

The first transition is on Paul’s second journey, joining Paul, Silas and Timothy in Troas to go on a ship to Philippi

Acts 16:10
So passing by Mysia, THEY came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 Now after he had seen the vision, immediately WE sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.

                Luke is left at Philippi on the second journey to help lead and encourage the church
He meets up with Paul again seven years later on the third missionary journey at Philippi

                The second transition of the third missionary journey, on the way back to Jerusalem:

Acts 20:5-6
These men, going ahead, waited for us at Troas. But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

                Luke is the companion of Paul thereafter

Luke had several opportunities in his life to interview Christians in Antioch, in Jerusalem and in Caesarea who were familiar with the earliest histories including Jesus’ ministry and the early church in Jerusalem

If Luke was a citizen of Antioch, he was very familiar with the early Gentile church there
Knew Barnabas (who was with the apostles in Acts 4: the early days of the Jerusalem church)

He knew John Mark from Antioch (Mark was on part of the first missionary journey and went with Barnabas on a second).  Mark wrote the gospel of Mark.

At the end of the third missionary journey Luke stayed in Jerusalem with Mnason, one of the original disciples (Acts 21:6) met James the Lord’s ½ brother (during the conference with Paul about Paul’s teaching re: the law of Moses)
                James was younger than Jesus…how much so???
                Likely grew up as Jesus’ younger brother in the Mary-Joseph household

Also, Luke spent two years with Paul when he was in custody in Caesarea (58-60 AD) after
Paul’s last visit to Jerusalem where he was imprisoned
                In Caesarea lived Philip the evangelist with his four prophesying
                                daughters
                                Also Cornelius had been saved there
                Caesarea was just 80 miles from Jerusalem (three day’s journey)

And perhaps Luke at Caesarea or Jerusalem met other members of the holy family not including Mary, the mother of Jesus
                Mary died at most 15 years after Jesus’ resurrection, 45 AD
                During these two years he likely wrote the gospel and much of Acts

Summary:
Luke personally experienced:
                The early days of the Antioch church
                Part of Paul’s second and third missionary journeys
                 The final trip of Paul to Jerusalem, Caesarea and then Rome
Luke the obtained information regarding the ministry of Jesus directly from:
                Mark, James, Barnabas, and Philip

Chapter 3
Summary
The Holy Spirit through Peter and John heal a lame man
Peter teaches that if Israel repents and receives Jesus
Then Jesus will return to restore the glory of Israel
And Jesus will usher in the millennial period promised by the Old Testament prophets

v. 1-6 Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms… Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”

v. 1 continuing in the Temple: keeping the law as observant Jews
                Josephus: two daily sacrifices in the Temple Morning and 3 PM

v. 7 The lame man healed / overjoyed / praising / the people are amazed

Is 35:6
Then the lame man shall leap like a hart

Matt. 11:4-5
Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

v. 12 Peter’s second sermon to the crowd at the temple (ONE LINE AT A TIME)
                a. Again: Jesus is the Messiah
b. It is in His name the man was healed
c. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob glorified, certified Jesus by His
resurrection
d.  Unfortunately, God’s chosen people, Israel, rejected and crucified Him
e. He is the Prince of Life (offers eternal life, the promise of our
resurrection)
f. He is God’s Servant predicted in the OT

Is. 52:13
Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently;
He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
14 Just as many were astonished at you,
So His visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men;

Peter continues:

17 “Yet now, brethren, I know that you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers.18 But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer..
19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out
v. 17 In ignorance, but you and your rulers (very gracious)

v. 18 Christ must suffer (Is. 53)

v. 18 Repent: the same verb metanoeo (MET-an-OH-eoh):

So that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20 and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.

v. 19 Time of refreshing may come: a very near Parousia and worldwide blessing described as the character of the Messianic age:

v. 21 restoration: apokatastasis (ap-oh-kah-TAS-tah-sis) = restoration to a former state

Acts. 1:6
“Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

A restoration of glorious, ruling Israel
Theocracy under David’s Son (not the resurrection of the dead)

Gen 12:2-3 THE PROMISE TO ABRAHAM
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

2 Sam 7:16 THE PROMISE TO DAVID
And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.”’ 17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

Jer. 23:5-6 THE PREDICTED REIGN OF THE MESSIAH
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Zech. 8:20, 21, 23 THE NATIONS WILL LEARN ABOUT GOD THROUGH ISRAEL
Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘Peoples shall yet come,
Inhabitants of many cities;
21 The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying,
(cont) “Let us continue to go and pray before the Lord,
And seek the Lord of hosts….
23 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.”’”

Is. 42:4 JUSTICE
He will not fail nor be discouraged,
Till He has established justice in the earth;

IS. 60:18 NO VIOLENCE
 Violence shall no longer be heard in your land,
Neither wasting nor destruction within your borders;
But you shall call your walls Salvation,
And your gates Praise.

Is. 11:6, 9 NO ANIMAL VIOLENCE
“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
The leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
The calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little child shall lead them.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,
For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea.

Hos. 2:18 NO WAR
Bow and sword of battle I will shatter from the earth,
To make them lie down safely.

Micah 4:3
He shall judge between many peoples,
And rebuke strong nations afar off;
They shall beat their swords into plowshares,
And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
Neither shall they learn war anymore.

Is 65:20 LONG LIFE
No more shall an infant from there live but a few days,
Nor an old man who has not fulfilled his days;
For the child shall die one hundred years old,
But the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed.

Peter presents Jesus as the second Moses:

Recall that John the Baptist was like a second Elijah (TWO VERSES)

22 For Moses truly said to the fathers, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you.
Deut 18:18
18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.

“You should listen to Him.”
Where have we heard this before?
The voice at the Transfiguration

Matt. 17: 5
While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

v. 25-26 an encouragement: you are the sons of the prophets and covenant
                To you FIRST, God has sent Jesus to bless you and the earth
                These recent events are a fulfillment of everything we have been waiting for
                So don’t miss your opportunity: repent and turn from your sins.
